Eric Mathis Q&A

What is your role at Spacia Group and what is your favorite part about what you do?

My role is “Estimating Specialist” and my favorite part of estimation is sitting down and digging into a project. I am a numbers guy, and crunching numbers in excel is where I thrive.

What experience have you had prior to your current role that most influences your work at Spacia Group?

Before joining Spacia, I spent three years estimating in the heavy construction industry. While art and mirrors are very different from 100-ton cranes, I feel that a lot of the process and mindset can still be applied.

What's the scariest thing you've ever done?

Backpacking through Alaska during peak Grizzly bear season.

What’s your favorite tradition and why?

Derby Week. I love the festivities that go on within the city. Horse racing is my favorite (and only) form of gambling, plus I enjoy an excuse to dress up in a summer suit and drink bourbon.

Who are your heroes in real life and why?

My hero is my late grandfather. Orphaned as a child, he ran away to Chicago at 15, lied about his age at 17 to fight in WW2, then used his GI Bill to send himself to college and become an accountant. He took about as bad a hand one can be dealt, and turned it into an honest and successful life.
